Richard Williams III was born on March 20, 1943 in Saginaw, Michigan. His father, Richard Williams II, was a lawyer and his mother, Gloria Williams, was a homemaker. He has two older sisters, Cheryl and Pamela.

Williams graduated from high school in 1961 and then attended the University of Michigan where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1965. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served for four years.

In 1969, Williams began his career as a stockbroker with Bache & Company in New York City. He worked there for two years before moving to Chicago to work for William Blair & Company. He remained with Blair for the next ten years, during which time he became a partner in the firm.

In 1981, Williams left William Blair to join Kidder Peabody & Company as a managing director. He remained with Kidder Peabody until 1984 when he joined Drexel Burnham Lambert as a managing director and head of corporate finance. He left Drexel Burnham Lambert in 1990 to join Smith Barney as a managing director and head of investment banking.
